Norinco MAK-90

I've had my MAK-90 since 1993, it's actually the second gun that I ever bought, back when AK's were dirt cheap and plentiful. Since I've had it I've put some American made parts in it so that I can have the standard AK pistol grip legally. If you don't know about the MAK-90, it's a Semi-Auto version of the Type 56, an AK-47 clone made by Norinco (China North Industries Corporation), a corporation that this owned by the Chinese government that makes not only light weapons, but they also make heavy weapons, vehicles, chemicals, machinery, in short, they make just about everything that the Chinese people, and whoever else wants it, wants.
The AK-47 platform is meant to be cheap and reliable, they will run many thousands of rounds through them without failing. They are known to work even after spending time in mud or being run over by trucks and tanks. Because they are known for this, this is the one weapon that I've ever neglected cleaning. I've spent a lot of time cleaning other guns that I have and left this one off to the side.
There is however one thing that you do need to clean fairly regularly on this type of rifle, that being the gas system. I've had the gas system freeze up on me on more than one occasion. When it freezes you can hardly get the action to move, I've had to use my heel to get it to move before. The one other problem that I've had, and this one is very recent, is the recoil spring seems to be sticking in the bolt carrier. In the picture to the left, right after Jessica fired a shot off the bolt "locked" to the rear, AK's don't lock back on an empty magazine, and the considering the magazine was full, we know that we have a problem.
Accuracy with the MAK-90 is not bad, with open sights you can easily hit center mass sized targets for 200 yards, and recoil isn't bad with a gas operated weapon in such a such a light caliber. The 7.62 X 39mm that the AK-47 is chambered for is about as powerful as a 30-30, although a little less at the muzzle, and a little more at 100 yards due to the bullet's profile. I know
that there are some elected officials in this country that will tell you that if you were to shoot a deer with an AK-47 it would "blow it away and there would be nothing left" but that's simply not true. If I'm going out hunting for deer in Florida were you're shooting at fairly close ranges the 7.62 X 39mm would be
a pretty good cartridge, out here in Utah were you are typically taking a longer shot I'd be more likely to go for a little more powerful of a round.
